Cosmo's Adoption Story
My stay at the shelter began towards the end of May 2020. I was processed by the shelter, checked over by a vet, and then waited in a cold gray metal kennel. Small dogs are kept on the inside of the kennel, so I didn't even get to see the outside except when I got to go to the play yard. I was in the shelter for a little over a week before mom came across my picture on the shelter website.
Mom fell in love with my big brown eyes and my cute fox ears, but adopting a dog during a pandemic isn't the easiest of things. Mom made an appointment to visit with me, but knew there was always a possibility my cute looks wouldn't necessarily mean a well behaved dog.
I didn't really pay much attention to her when the shelter staff brought me to meet mom. I ran around the yard, sniffed things and peed on them, and pretty much ignored all the people talking about me. Mom apparently asked a lot of questions, like how I was with other dogs, did I bark a lot, and anything else the shelter could tell her. After our visit, I was taken back to my kennel. I had no idea that I had been adopted...it just seemed like any other day. I stayd in the kennel for several more days until I could get microchipped and go home.
FINALLY mom came to pick me up. I had no idea what was going on. I was put into a car with these strangers and off they wen. I was really shy when I first came home and I was really confused by the dog with long ears who refused to chase me or play tug (turns out he's a rabbit, not a dog...who knew?!)
When mum first brought me home, I didn't want to be left alone AT ALL. If she left the room, I followed her. If she went out the door, I cried and jumped so much she worried I would hurt myself. She dove into training websites and videos, and learned about how she could help me feel more comfortable. Mum did some intensive training with me, and now I don't mind when she leaves me.
A lot people overlook us older dogs at the shelter, but I still have a lot of years and a lot of love. I'm so happy to have found my forever home - Cosmo 🐶🐾❤️
